Carl “Gene” Smith, 89, of Salem, received his heavenly reward on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at Springlake Health and Rehab Center in Salem, KY. Carl lived most of his life in the Paducah area but also grew up and graduated high school in Jackson, MI. Carl was a Kentucky Colonel for his service to the community and nation. Carl is also a US Army veteran who proudly served in the Korean War as a Chaplain. Carl was also an ordained Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served many local churches including Highland Baptist Church of Paducah where he Pastored just before coming incapacitated. Carl loved God, family, friends, cars and helping others. Carl spent many hours in prison ministries working with many inmates helping them on the road to recovery and knowing Jesus. He donated time and money to The Boys Club and many other organizations over the years.
Carl was the last member of his family to pass away. He is survived by five nieces, and one nephew, along with many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents, grandparents, brother, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit the family on Tuesday, September 24th, 2019 at Lindsey Funeral Home of Paducah from 11am until 12pm. Funeral service will begin at 12 noon following visitation with burial and military rites to follow at Newton Creek Cemetery.
