Marie Carnes

Marie Carnes, 79, of Metropolis, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 27 2022 at Baptist Health Hospital.

Marie was a selfless Christian woman who would give anyone the shirt off of her back. She was always smiling and could light up a room. Marie was a hard worker throughout her life, but always found time for a joke. She could be found fishing or playing Scrabble in her free time. Marie was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family and held a special place in her heart especially for her grandchildren

Marie is survived by five children, Jojo Mathis, Steve (Angie) Barger, Greg Carnes, Chester (Patsy) Carnes, and Martha (Tony) Carnes (son-in-law Billy Myers); three siblings, Stanley Barger, Sharon James, and Sonny Barger; eight grandchildren, Christy Jo, Jeremy, Kurt, Megan (Chris), Georgia Lee, Wyatt, Ashley (Tony) and Cody; 14 great-grandchildren, Dalton, Olivia, Danielle, Luke, Ally, Mariah, Jayde, Roxanne, Jesse, Hannah, Israel, Emmarie, Phoenix, and Evinee; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marie in death is her husband, Freddie Carnes; son, Fred Carnes Jr.; her parents; and three siblings, Gerald Barger, Jean Jennings, and Maxine Erb; and one son-in-law, Byron Mathis.

A Celebration of Life for Marie will be held Friday, December 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm at The Refuge Church (714 Filmore St, Metropolis, IL 62960) with Pastor Tony Morris officiating. Friends may visit the family from 1:00 pm to 2:00 on Friday.
